104th Drake Relays is April 24th-27th
The Drake Relays are a celebrated
tradition not only by students and alumni, but by the surrounding Iowa
community. While Drake does have a traditional homecoming in the fall, the
school celebrates and treats the Relays as their actual homecoming. Alumni
return to campus, and students and community members alike celebrate the pride
and tradition the track meet brings.
While the track meet is held for a
single weekend near the end of April, celebrations and events begin on campus
almost 3 weeks prior.

Meals
The school will provide money for dinner on
Thursday and a portion of Friday. You will want to have money for meals
on Friday and Saturday, t-shirts, and anything you might need or want.
You also should have some food and fluids with you to have at the stadium each
day.
Weather
Be prepared for ANY weather
condition! Bring extra clothes in case of rain or cold, and most of all
bring Sun-Screen and some light clothes to cover up with
in the event of a very sunny day.
Warm-Up Procedures
All athletes will be allowed to warm-up in the
field house, Knapp Center, or soccer field by the tennis courts. The
warm-up “track” in the parking lot near the stadium is available 1 hour before
your event. No warm-ups are allowed on the Drake track or infield.
For field events, warm-ups will take place at
the venue and will begin 60 minutes before the scheduled start for jumping
events. Throwing events should check-in at least 30 minutes before
competition time. Throwing implements must be weighed at the throwing
venue at least 2 hours prior to the event.
Competition
Athletes in running events must be checked in
15 minutes before the event’s scheduled start time. The check-in station
is in the parking lot east of the stadium. All individuals and members of
relays must go to this check-in point.
All individuals and anchor runners need hip
numbers on both sides. Distance events will get a third number for the
chest. Relay running order will be verified at that time as well.
Bib numbers are to be worn on the front of your
jersey. Keep it if you compete on multiple days.
No Moye starting blocks will be allowed at this
meet.
Access to the track will be from the check-in
area only. You will be lead by Drake officials to the start area for your
race. You will place all training shoes and sweats in a box to be picked up
after your event.
Champions in all events will be recognized at
the awards stand but will not be presented with your awards. I will get a
packet with all awards at the conclusion of the meet.
After your event, you will be escorted from the
track to the recovery area to pick up your clothes and training shoes.

Drake University will welcome the USA Track & Field (USATF) Championships back to campus next year when the event makes a return to Des Moines. USA Track & Field announced the selection this morning.
This will be the second time that Drake hosts the event, which is USATF's premier event for the selection of elite professional athletes to represent the United States in outdoor international competition.
"Drake University is proud to be the host of yet another championship track and field event," says Brian Brown, Drake associate athletic director and director of the Drake Relays. "This will be our second time hosting the USATF outdoor championships since 2010, to go along with three NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships since 2008."
"This bid further solidifies Drake and Des Moines as a premier track and field location.
It is both gratifying and rewarding to be recognized as a world-class venue by the USA Track and Field governing body. We look forward to hosting our nation's best as they prepare for the 2013 world championships."
The event's high level of competition was evident in 2010 when the championships were first held at Drake. The five-day event, which featured 1,700 athletes, produced two American records - Chaunte Lowe in the high jump and Kara Patterson in the javelin. Competitors also achieved seven world-leading performances.
Drake's tradition of hosting track and field events has proven that local enthusiasm for the sport is strong. The Drake Relays, which will celebrate its 103rd year next month, traditionally attracts sellout crowds. Drake also recently hosted the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2008 and 2011 and will host the 2012 event.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The Drake Relays says it is offering more than $500,000 in prize money in 2013 for a series of rematches from the London Olympics.
Meet organizers say they'll offer a $50,000 purse for invitational races and $25,000 for field events - the largest such purses in the U.S. Drake says it has lined up a rematch between the top three finishers of the men's 110 and the 400-meter hurdles.
Five gold medalists from London have agreed to compete next April at Drake, including U.S. pole vaulter Jenn Suhr and long jumper Brittney Reese.
South African double-amputee Oscar Pistorious is also slated to run in Iowa. U.S. hurdlers Dawn Wells and Kelly Wells are on board as well, though it's unclear if Des Moines native Lolo Jones will face her rivals.

The Drake Relays got an unexpected boost yesterday from Iowa-based supermarket chain Hy-Vee which pledged more than half a million dollars in sponsorship for the April, 2013, meeting. Meet director Brian Brown already put some of that cash to work, snaring 16 current Olympic medalists, including the entire podium from the men’s 110 and 400-meter hurdle finals. Hy-Vee officials said the meet would have a whopping $500,000 in prize money.
The announcement took at least several industry insiders Race Results Weekly contacted today completely by surprise. The Drake Relays had become the third wheel of USA track meets held on the final weekend in April, overshadowed by the better-funded Penn Relays in Philadelphia and the top distance marks set at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto. But $50,000 prize money purses in each of the running events and $25,000 in field events are likely to change those perceptions dramatically.
“The Drake Relays is one of the crown jewels of track and field, an event that has transcended athletic competition to become a true community celebration,” explained Randy Edeker, chairman, CEO and president of Hy-Vee, Inc., in a statement. “Hy-Vee is thrilled to partner with Drake as the university builds on a proud tradition and ushers in an exciting new era for the Relays.”
Part of the Hy-Vee sponsorship package includes $120,000 in prize money for a suite of road races which will be held in conjunction with the meet. Those include the Wellmark Grand Blue Mile, 10-kilometer race, half marathon, and a new 6-kilometer race staged in conjunction with Character Counts in Iowa, a charity which helps Iowans practice and recognize good character.
Hy-Vee’s money is also buying 90 minutes in prime time on ESPN2.
“Our relationship with Hy-Vee will further the legacy of the Drake Relays as never imagined before,” said meet director Brown in a statement. “The athletes and fans will be truly inspired by the level of competition at the Blue Oval for the 104th running of America’s Athletic Classic. I have never been this excited about the athletes that you will see compete at the Drake Relays this year.”
Brown announced the following events would be contested with these marquis athletes:
Men’s 400m: Luguelin Santos (DOM), Silver Medalist; Lalonde Gordon (TRI), Bronze Medalist; Oscar Pistorius, finalist.
Men’s 110mH: Aries Merritt (USA) Gold Medalist; Jason Richardson (USA) Silver Medalist; Hansle Parchment (JAM) Bronze Medalist.
Men’s 400mH: Felix Sanchez (DOM), Gold Medalist; Michael Tinsley (USA), Silver Medalist; Javier Culson (PUR), Bronze Medalist.
Men’s PV: Renaud Lavillenie (FRA), Gold Medalist; Bjorn Otto (GER), Silver Medalist
Men’s TJ: Will Claye (USA), Silver Medalist
Women’s 110mH: Dawn Harper (USA), Silver Medalist; Kelly Wells (USA), Bronze Medalist
Women’s PV: Jenn Suhr (USA), Gold Medalist; Becky Holliday (USA), Olympic Finalist
Women’s LJ: Brittney Reese (USA), Gold Medalist; Janay DeLoach (USA), Bronze Medalist
